Getting AOL to use new ADSL Modem.
Currently I connection to my 512Mb broadband service using the 'BT Voyager 105 USB ADSL Modem' that was supplied by my service provided about a week ago.
I wanted to get a wireless router so I can set the PC up somewhere else (i've had to move it closer the master socket so it works) and eventually hook up my Xbox to the Live service. I purchased the 'LinkSys ADSL2MUE' (ADSL modem), 'LinkSys WRT54GS' (Wireless 802.11g broadband router with Speedbooster) & a 'LinkSys WUSB54GS' (Wireless 802.11g USB Network Adaptor with Speedbooster). So far, I've only been tryin to get the modem to work. To no avail. I can't get it to work via either the Ethernet connection OR USB. When I try to get AOL to detect the new device it displays it as something like 'Other ISDN or DSL connection device', which I choose as my connection method. But when I try and sigh in it wont connect. The modem IS connecting to DSL as the LED flashes (connecting) and then stays alight (connected). I can't figure out why I can't connect. Has anyone got any ideas? |

How does AOL enter into the mix? Is your ISP AOL?

I know nothing about AOL broadband, but I suspect you may have to contact their tech support to attach a new modem. This is just a guess...

My ISP is AOL (broadband) as well, i found the same difficulties when trying to set up the connection through a router because of a mix of OS's (both XP and a 9x system) that i needed an internet connection on, although difficult it is possible after a while to get it to work and i did not need to contact AOL. i basically spent several hours trying to change settings both in the AOL software, on the router/modem and on IE's settings.
(you may also want to check out AOL's compatibility page as not all modems/routers will work with AOL broadband) |

Love to. But went with them in like October for dial-up, which to their credit worked without a hitch, and so am still locked in a year long contract with them. Grr.
But "that's life... that's what all the people say."

Last time I told someone to dump AOL, their reply was "AOL bought me this house"!!!! I guess in retrospect it was AOL stockholders who lost their investment bought the house!!
Anyway, AOL should have nothing to do with your problem. I would set up a Yahoo or G-mail e-mail account and totally forget about AOL. I always recommend folks not to use the ISP provided e-mail account because when you cancel the ISP you loose your e-mail address. So much easier using a free web mail account that will hopefully never change, unless the provider goes under. If your DSL modem is in sync, your PC should be able to connect to the net. Do the following with the PC directly connected to the DSL modem via an ethernet cable. On your computer, Start, Run, type "cmd" then press enter. In the black box type "ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt" Go to my computer, click on the C drive, open c:\ipconfig.txt and then copy this info for the machine and post it back here for review and comment. We should be able to give you some more insight once you do this. JamesO |
