Connection Problem

Hello, I have encountered a very irritating problem with my new pc - my dial up connection is dropped after about (on average) 2 minutes. It seems to happen more quickly when recieving info, but the connection fails anyway if left idle. It just drops, no warning message etc.

Im using a modem from my old pc, and the same connection same line etc - the connection was fine in my old machine, and works fine from my apple... I already swapped the cable, reinstalled the modem, connection and windows(!) to no avail. I also tried the modem in a different pci slot.

The modem is a generic one, which appears in device manager as:

Intel(R) 537 Data Fax Voice V.92 Modem

Im running XP, sp1, (completely new install) on a Asus p4c800-Deluxe.

Any help would be very much appreciated, I cant connect to windows update or anything!

Thaks in advance, Tim

Sounds like a driver issue. Does the modem have a name or other id information on it?

If not, you can pick up another modem for under $20. Look here.

mmm... thats what I feared :( It was a very cheap modem (I think it was called speedcom or something...) and I dont recall them having a website.

Would it be some sort of conflict? The modem was working under XP fine before.

Thanks for your help! I checked out the website but alas im in UK - theres always ebuyer though!

I think the modem is fine, but without the correct software it will not work as it should.
