Wireless internet troubles
We just got wireless internet today and I'm already having trouble with it...
It's hooked to the main computer (which is mainly used by my brother) and the network adapter is hooked to my computer. Occasionally, my computer will freeze up: music stops (or skips annoyingly), mouse won't move, ctrl+alt+delete does nothing because the keyboard also freezes. And I've noticed that the network adapter just shuts off. Both the power and link lights go out. I checked the plugs around my computer and the ones in the main computer. Everything's pluged in fine. I thought that maybe my brother was accidentally kicking the box and causing it to come unplugged but we moved it and it's still happening. Please please PLEASE help if you can! |

Details please.
What is your OS and patch level? What is your OS speed? Ctrl, Alt, Del, Task Manager, Performance CPU % usage? Amount of memory installed and amount used? Ctrl, Alt, Del, Task Manager, Applications: What is typically shown? Ctrl, Alt, Del, Task Manager, Processes: How many are shown? If it is an XP machine, I prefer no less than 512 MB of memory. Seen them run with 128 MB and 256 MB but many run VERY slow! JamesO |

As for the others...well, when I hit ctrl+alt+delete NOTHING comes up because everything freezes. Mouse, keyboard, harddrive, everything. |

Sorry, I ment OS and OS patch level, not OS speed.
Do you have Windows XP? No service packs? Service Pack 1? Service Pack 2? You go to Settings, Control Panel, System, look at the General tab for info on OS and RAM. It sounds like you have either not enough RAM and/or some sort of malware or virus. You are probably going to need to do a lot of house cleaning before you can sort out your machine? JamesO |

Your machine sounds like it is fairly up to date and has a resonable amount of memory. Probably will rule this out for the momement.
Sounds like it you may have a driver problem with the wireless device??? Explain in more detail what wireless hardware you have and how it is connected, include the make and model of the devices. Are you doing some kind of internet connection sharing?? Your network topology is not very clear based upon your original post. JamesO |

How does your wireless internet tie into any of that? I think I'm just not understanding your setup - you didn't mention where the wireless is used. Does your PC have a wireless PCI card in it? It sounds like everything is "hooked up" to each other, impling direct connections without the use of wireless.
You can try undoing what you "did" to see if that fixes it. If not, it may have been a coincidence, and you can try running adaware or spybot to see if that fixes it. |

From the description, I assume you are using ICS and the other machine is the master, correct? Does this happen even when nobody is using the other machine?

SP2 is better for a wireless connection because it allows you not to get booted or lose as much of a connection as before. If you have at least 512 of memory and a hard drive that is atleast 40GB..Than i can share other things with you. Your not stateing what is in your computer percisely. You have to consider how much you have in your computer that may be slowing it down for starters. Run a spybot search and destroy, do a virus scan and defragment along with a disk clean. Doesnt have to been done yet if you know your computer is not filled with junk and you have recently been maintaining your computer. You have you also consider the distance your computer is from the router some wi-fi cards and adapters cannot get good reception out of its boundries. There is also a problem with walls, how many walls are between your computer and the router, along with all this you must pay attention to the positioning of your computer, is it hidden, placed close to the wall or is being blocked in, low on the ground, all these things are a factor in regards to how well your computer can recieve packets. Dont have it low to the ground but at times it doesnt matter, try not to have the computer too close to the wall or other objects that will restrict it from receiving. You may also want to consider buying an external atenna (cantenna) for better reception, but prior to doing that if you have done all the above and its still giveing you problems you may want to go to highjackthis log....Did it work fine in the begining?, Was the computer used before and what was it performing like? Im on a LAN from my neighbors home, i go thru 2 walls :)
