dial-up connection speeds

I have a desktop computer at home that connects at about half the speed that my laptop connects (14.4-19k vs. 33.3 avg). Both computers use the same line (I've tried different lines and the same line), and the desktop consistenly connects at a far slower speed than it should.

The laptop is a 1.8 Ghz IBM R40 Thinkpad and the desktop is a 2.4 Ghz e-machines. Both have 56k modems, both use windows XP (although the laptop has XP Pro and the desktop XP Home). I also downloaded and installed the latest drivers from the modem's manufacturer for the destop.

Any idea why the connection speeds are so much different?

Re: max port speed settings

My max port speed setting is 921600 (highest available). Otherwise I have never heard of being able to set the default connection speed (i.e. 14.4 kbs). As far as I know I've checked every possible thing related to the modem on the computer. I've checed the system properties-device manager, computer management, modem properties, etc. I've also checked that the TCP/IP protocol is installed.

Thanks for the help. Any other ideas?
