Verizon FIOS Router locks up Win ME

I have a really strange problem here. Just signed up for Verizon FIOS fiber internet service. The service runs through a D-Link Di-604 router, which must be present for connectivity. Every time I hook the PC's NIC to the router, the PC locks up to the point that a hard reset is needed.

I can hook up the PC to a standard LAN and it runs fine. Likewise, I can hook up different PCs to the DI-604 router and it doesn't cause them to lock up. I have tired both a D-Link and 3Com NIC and both do the same thing.

Verizon and D-Link tech support have both suggested things but nothing has worked. Here are few stats:

PC: Dell 4100 with current BIOS
OS: Windows ME with all current updates/fixes
NIC: D-Link DFE-530TX+ with current drivers
System is clean from viruses and malware according to Ad-Aware and NAV2003 (current definitions on both)

The PC used to lock up immediately when the NIC was connected to the router. It was discovered that my version of ZoneAlarm had some age on it so it was removed. The PC then started working briefly but it still locks up eventually. I might be able to use it for 5-15 minutes but it will lockup before long.

Running out of ideas. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Keith

I don't know about ME, but since removing ZoneAlarm changed things, I'd say you have something either corrupted in the TCP/IP stack, or some application is causing the issue. Just out of curiousity, have you tried connecting to the router with the fiber service disconnected? I'm curious if it's some sort of activity, or just the D-Link router for some reason.

It doesn't matter if the router is connected to Verizon service or not, the PC still locks up.

I'm not sure how to force the TCP/IP stack to be reinstalled. Do you have a sugestion? I have removed and added NIC's several times which always seemed to reset all of the TCP/IP setting but it might not be reloading TCP/IP stack during that process.

I should also add that I have connected the PC to a different TCP/IP LAN and it worked just fine. It connected to the internet and other PC's with no trouble. Likewise, other PC's seem have no problems working with the router.

Well, you can add NETBEUI, and then remove EVERYTHING else under Network Properties, and also uninstall the NIC. Reboot, let it discover the NIC, and it'll regenerate the other entries when you add TCP/IP. The NETBEUI is just there to hold your place, you can remove it after configuring TCP/IP again.

How did you used to connect to the Internet before FIOS?

How much RAM does your machine have?

I would maybe try this RegCleaner to see if this helps any??

http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-dow...cleaner4.3.htm

Install this, go to Tools, Registry Clean Up, Do Them All. Select everything it finds and Delete them all, click Done, then Exit. I run this every few weeks as normal house cleaning. I have found this is a good tool that has not caused problems.

Another strange thing you may try is to make sure the D-Link router is plugged into the same power strip as your Me machine. Not too hard I assume, just a wild guess, but worth a try??

I used simple dial-up prior to FIOS. I will try the registry cleaner and also force a reload of the TCP/IP stack when I get back in town in few days. I'll report back here.

Thanks to JamesO and johnwill for the tips.
