Routing Cable
Provider: Tampa Bay Road Runner
Service: Business class Modem: zyxel 964 modem/hub? Router: D-Link DI-524 Version A Setup Steps: Step 1 Log into the web-based configuration by typing in the IP address of the router (default:192.168.0.1) in your web browser Step 2 Click the Home tab and click the WAN button. Dynamic IP Address is the default value, however, if Dynamic IP Address is not selected as the WAN type, select Dynamic IP Address by clicking on the radio button. Click Clone Mac Address. Click on Apply and then Continue to save the changes Step 3 Power cycle the cable modem and router: Turn the cable modem off (first) Turn the router off Leave them off for 2 minutes** Turn the cable modem on (first) Wait until you get a solid cable light on the cable modem Turn the router on Wait 30 seconds ** If you have a Motorola (Surf Board) modem, leave off for at least 5 minutes. Step 4 Follow step 1 and log back into the web configuration. Click the Status tab and click the Device Info button. If you do not have a public IP address under the WAN heading, click on DHCP Renew and then click Continue. It may take a few minutes to obtain an IP address. This worked at home following the steps with RR home service. But when taking this to my friends store, I'm unable to reach the internet. I've tried both a cross-over cable and a patch cable between the two devices (can never remember which). Plugging into LAN1 on the cable modem and into WAN on the D-Link. I can reach the router fine, but for some reason unable to get past it. As I'm writing this, I'm wondering if they have a static IP address instead of a Dynamic one by default with the business class and thats why I'm not seeing it getting a IP address in the status menu on the router. Other then the previous mentioned possibility, I'm out of ideas and looking for some tips.

i know that sometimes, i have had to have the cable provider trigger my cable modem.
i would try connecting a single computer to it, and see if you can get that to connect. if it does, then you can see the settings it used, and that might give you some help. i'm sure johnwill will help too, as soon as he sees this.

Here are some ideas to toss your way!
I assume you get your cable modem to lock up and sync? Do you know anything about the cable modem TX & RX levels, can you access the cable modem signal levels to get an idea of what is going on? Maybe there is a problem with the return path on this drop to the location you are setting up? Try a cable amp if you have a spare handy, it might be worth a try? Contact RR and ask if they can see the modem on the network? I assume this is something they should be able to do? Maybe the cable provider binds service to the original MAC address, try cloning the address from the original machine you set up the service with? Good luck. JamesO |

Depending on the specific cable company, you won't be able to take a cable modem that has been provisioned for a specific location very far from that location. I've tried to take my modem to a friend's place about three miles away. (same provider and office), and it doesn't work there. His also doesn't work here. When connected at the place they were enabled, they work fine. My guess is the MAC address is actually maintained at the local neighborhood gateway, and the modem will only work nearby. FWIW, it does work at my next door neighbor's house, which further verifies my contention.
