You should have a great signal 20' away. Have you tried another channel(s) on the router? Try moving the router around.
Do you have any 900 MHZ phones in the house? These are on the same channels as wifi. Try unplugging power to any 900 MHZ devices in the house and see if your signal improves. Another thing you could do if none of the above helps is replace the pci card with an usb wireless nic. This could be moved around to find a good signal.

Sorry, I did this on 2 post last night. I was talking about 2.4 Ghz phones, not 900 MHZ.
Ok, to answer your questions. In the wireless setup section of your router you should see a place to change the channel your router is using. Mine has channels 1-11. When you change channels on the router the computer should change automatically. I usb wireless network card plugs into the usb ports on the back of your computer and had a wire that runs to a box with the network card in it. The nice thing about these is you can move them around to get a better signal.

The default setup is as follows for your router
type 10.0.0.2 into the address line in your browser It will ask you for a user name and password. Try the ones below. They are the default. username = admin password = epicrouter Now look for the wireless setup.

If your desktop is on the floor, put the router on the floor.
If your desktop has the cover off, put it back on. If you can configure the wireless to run at a slower rate, limit it. If you can force the desktop to run at wireless B vs. G try it. Wireless G has less range than B! I have also forced some marginal links to 2 Mbps as the machine kept toggling between 5.5 and 2 Mbps causing network problems. If this fails, try a remote antenna on the desktop. JamesO |
