I've been told that I'm going to be getting a new modem, it's supposed to be a motorola modem for a cable connection. It will be a DHCP connection. That means that as soon as I start the computer I'm automatically online whether I want to be or not. My question is there's always a few seconds needed for the computer to start and for the firewall and anti-virus program to connect, does that mean those few seconds I'm unprotected and run the risk of getting a virus? I was told that if I really want to disconnect I can put it on standby however that's not recommended since it will damage the modem. Does anyone have this modem, are you still protected; to me it sounds like I'm leaving the door open for everyone to come in. I often need to do work on the computer without going online but now I won't have that choice.

Not to worry, before the connection is established, all of your firewall protection will be enabled.
FWIW, all my systems here are connected 24/7, no worries.
