56k Modem Problem
(sorry to double post, but appearently nobodys willing to move my old post to this forum, so just go ahead and delete the old one)
OS: Windows ME Computer: Compaq Persario 4000 ok, I have this client PC, it they have netzero. At first, the modem woulden't even respond (even through the driver showed fine). So I removed it and re-added it, and it worked fine. I took a bunch of Wan/VPN junk out of thier network (based on the software on thier computer, they don't use it). Anyways, after dialing up NetZero, the dialing work, user/pass authentication works, but then it says it can't connect to net zeros network. I went through the networks TCP/IP settings, and the TCP IP properties isn't...complete. It only had DNS, Advanced, and bindings. I know this isn't how the TCP/IP config should look. What's more intreasting, is if I add another TCP/IP, it had everything it should. But when I apply, and restart, it only has one TCP/IP, and it's the one with only 3 tabs. anyone have ANY idea what is wrong here? upd: I just switched out the modem, same problem. I un-installed What NetZero tells me to install from windows system components (Dial up, Hyper terminal, dialer), and re-installed them. Same stupid thing |

Hi,
This one sounds difficult. It almost sounds to me like you have a resource sharing problem and it shuts down when encountering that issue. If it were mine, here is what I would do: Why not give the following a try: 1) Download the newest and latest drivers from the modem manufacturer’s website. (I know, you have a disk, but download the newest and best anyhow. 2) Enter Start, Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager and DELETE any references to any modem. 3) Shut down and physically remove the modem and then put the modem back in PCI slot #3 (Third slot down from the AGP slot) 4) Boot up and enter the BIOS setup menu. 5) In the BIOS setup menu find the PnP area. If you are running WinXP, then DISABLE Pnp….however, if you are using Win98, then make sure it is ENABLED. 6) Save and Exit 7) Boot back up and when the computer finds your modem, then load the drivers that have been downloaded from the manufacturer’s website. It may tell you that the latest and best are already installed, but install them anyway. (for example, WinXP only has v.90 drivers and not the most recent v.92 that are needed for best operation) If it says they are not digitally signed, then load them anyway. This is a long story, but I can assure you it is a money issue and a rip off from Microsoft in my opinion. This should get you going! |

I already did most of that. I found the latest drivers, which didn't help. I even tried another modem in a different slot, got the same thing. And removing it from device manager is one of the very first things I tried. Actually at first it woulden't even communicate with the modem, and removing it and letting it reload allowed it to communicate with the computer. I think this might be a problem with windows internal DUN or networking. Is the TCP/IP config tab in Network (the one in the control panel) sopposed to have 3 tabs when it's binded with a dial up adapter? the OS is Windows ME, and the cmos config, has nothing about PNP inside it.

ok here is an intreasting update
I put a network card in. The TCP/IP config diag is all there, but the card refuses to get anything from dhcp. and when I go into winipcfg, all the renew/release buttons are disabled. So I put in the IP address/gateway/subnet in manually (this is for my own network, to see if I can get it to do something). Now, I can ping any of my local computers, but I can't access the internet...unless I access a website by IP address instead of domain name. Is windows networking just screwed or what exacly do you think is wrong here? |

Download and run Hijackthis. It sounds like you have a Winsock 2 problem. Post the log from hijackthis here. We might be able to better assist you with that information....
Thanks

I had the same problem with Netzero, but found out that it was a problem with one of the lines that was connected to the phone. I think it has to due with the connection speed.
You may want to see if you can download Juno. Juno and Netzero are joined... I get 10 free hours with both (total of 20 hours free). If you connect with Juno it will tell you what speed the connection is. Mine was 2.9k till I fixed the line now it's a blazing (haha) 50k. Don't know if this will help your problem, but that's what did it for me. |
