Losing connection-1 computer only

Hi. I have 2 Windows XP machines wired to a Linksys router, an HP and a Compaq. Lately (like the past three months) the HP has been randomly disconnecting from the network. when I check Network Connections, it shows that the IP is lost. The only way to get it back is to shut down, power down the modem and the router, and restart everything. I don't think it's the router b/c the Compaq doesn't ever disconnect.

Could it be software? I've done virus scans, registry cleaning, and removal of unnecessary services.

Please help!

Start with the basics. Swap the port on the router with the working machine, change the cable, and replace the NIC, in that order.

Hmm. I noticed in Network Connections something called "1394 connection". It seemed to be trying to access the router at the same time as my Ethernet connection. I disabled it, and the computer hasn't disconnected once. New question: what the heck is a 1394 connection, and why is it in my network connections?

That's the firewire port, it's curious that it's stepping on the signal, I've never seen that before.

I have run into all sorts of connectivity issues where disabling that 1394 connection solved connectivity issues. Seems like it fights other connections for control or something. Funny thing is how it shows as enabled yet the called has never connected anything to the 1394 port on their pc.

Very odd. :) However, I guess all's well that ends well...
