Would someone explain VPN to me?
Hi,
I have an old Tecra 740CDT laptop which has what I thought was a modem built in (it actually say DAA option board on it). When I try to set up a new connection it shows Microsoft VPN adapter as the device. How does this work? Thanks, Derek |

It sounds like someone has configured a VPN connection for the computer. VPN is an acronym for Virtual Private Network. What it does is creates an encrypted tunnel over the internet, so you can pass private data from one point to another. Businesses will use this alot to let there mobile users gain access to there internal network shares or domain. They will also use this to connect one network site to another, because it is so cost effective.(no need to lease dedicated lines for site-to-site WAN infrustructure, since you can just create a VPN tunnel over the internet.)
I would have to assume the laptop you have was previously owned by a company and that is why it shows a VPN connection. The VPN connection is configured for there business. If this laptop was owned by a company, I am amazed that they didn't wipe the drive clean and re-install the software.(normal business practice because of private company data that may be left on the computer) You could just remove the VPN connection and configure a new connection to your ISP. |

Re: Would someone explain VPN to me?
Hi name is Jack I am an Australian living and working in Bangkok but would like an IP address in New Zealand for business purposes my friend’s sister lives there but is not computer literate. So to get an internet account and a solution that could so to speak “plug and play” would be good to hear. I thought about a proxy server probably not reliable also thought about a VPN tunnel... So would love to hear from you maybe you have a better solution.
Kind Regards Jack |
