56k MODEMS BACK-TO-BACK
am trying to connect two computers back to back and did follow instructions on this page http://www.jagshouse.com/modem.html I want to share internet using a RAS server over a distance of 300 metres on a phone wire which i have supplied voltage like instructed on the page above, both machines are winxp, keep on getting error that the "remote machine did not respond/reply" when I enter ATA on the server, am getting "no carrier" error. These modems are not communicating, just what is the right and cheapest way of achieving this. am using two US ROBOTICS 56K 1806, please help

The cheapest way is with a pair of short-haul modems. Here's one of many such products: http://www.telebyteusa.com/catalog/products/227.htm
