Slow Downloads
My downloads with a 56K modem start at 11 KB/Sec, but slows down to 3.5-4 KB/Sec after 15-30 sec. The icon in the system tray reads 42667 bps. I have used Star Downloader, and updated the modem driver with the same results. Any ideas as how to speed up my downloads? (Other than DSL, T1,... ect)

I would guess you have a virus or alot of spyware, I would have a look at these free products:
Virus scanners http://www.hbedv.com -for antivir www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php -for AVG free http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10...age&tag=button -for ad-aware SE http://www.spybot.info/en/mirrors/index.html -for SpyBot - search & destroy To increase the speed of a 56k modem to almost broadband speed for cheap (only works while surfing internet, not for games etc.) check out: http://www.onspeed.com hope thats helped you and sorry for the slow reply

4k on a dialup modem seems about average considering 5.6k is the max. It sounds like your systray icon updates its reading every 30secs, so the 11k you get when you first connect is just a connection surge. As you continue downloading at 4k/s, the reading averages out over time giving a more accurate figure.
If you don't want to upgrade to broadband you can still use a download manager like FlashGet to help speed things up a bit. |

Sounds like your download is probably normal.
Try this link, it averages over the download timeframe so it can give you a more realist idea of your download speeds. http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ JamesO |
