Will a USB hub work?
I have cable Internet connected to a Motorola surfboard modem. My main computer is connected to it by a USB cable and my second computer gets its connection through the main one by means of a network setup with a crossover cable. I have never been able to get the Cat 5 connection on the Motorola to work and have always used the USB connection.
The question is if I run the USB cable from the motorola to a 2 port USB hub and then to both computers will I be able to get internet on the 2nd computer without the first one being on?

No that would not be possible. What type of problems are you having with the ethernet port of the modem?

Have tried four different cables and three different computers and nics and still cant get anything out of it. I don't want to pull it apart to see if there is a loose wire etc because i can't afford to buy another one if i break something .Guess I will just live with what i have now.
Thanks for your prompt reply

I put up with it as it workd okay on USB but one day I decided to really get it fixed so I rang my ISP who supplied it and after going through the motions with the endless questions on the Que card he decided that it was the connection on the modem DUHH I told him that at the beginning, anyhow he then tod me that it was 10 DAYS out of warranty and that they would not do anything about it.

I'd suggest you do some further investigation into the Ethernet port. Are you sure it's a modem issue, and not the connected machine or simply a network configuration problem?

I will have another go at it but I have tried three computers that work ok connected by the USB but will not work on the ethernet. The computers were stand alone and not cofigured for a network.
If anyone has some suggestions please jump in.

Did you power cycle the modem when you changed from the USB to the Ethernet? That's a required step.
