Question about router and ping reducing

The story if like this, my friend moved out and we bought a cheap router so we both could play 360. He let me keep it when it moved out, speedtest.net did the average 20mbps download 10 upload and 10 latency.

Which was great, then his brother came moved in and he brought his own computer and now, this same computer gets about 3 download not even 1 upload and about 500ms of latency. So I turned off his torrenting and it went down a little but still unplayable, about 500 latency. So I did a speedtest on his computer and HE gets the 20 download 10 upload 10 latency....***? Does anyone know why this is ask a few people and they think it might have something to do with him probably going in and changing settings.

Answers would be wonderful thanks.

Re: Question about router and ping reducing

I'd suspect you're right about the router.

I'd reset it to factory defaults and see what happens. If that solves it, I'd suggest he either live with it or buy his own Internet access.

I got a cheap router TRENDnet TW100-S4W1CA/AS, so would a "gaming router" be helpful to me? Someone also linked me to http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833127091 would that help my case too?

Someone told me to also "change the connection" between this computer and the other one, and linked me to http://www.trendnet.com/asp/download...UBTYPE_ID=1032 but I'm pretty tech retarded and not understanding how to do this.

Re: Question about router and ping reducing

Actually, what would be useful is to prohibit him from accessing the router setup at all!

The only real cure would probably be a more advanced router that offers true bandwidth management, which would allow you to limit his total bandwidth usage.

If he persists in screwing up your access, I'd suggest he buy his own Internet and he can hog it all he likes.
