Laptop connected to wireless router but cannot accesss internet

ok so I have a Sony Vaio laptop and just recently got a linksys wireless router, model WRT54G. So I connected that router to my at&t modem. I previously connected that at&t modem directly to my laptop and it worked fine (I'm doing that now). But when it is connected to the wireless router, my laptop recognizes the linksys connection but it has an error pare when I try to open the internet. I really don't know anything at all about computers so I thought I'd give this a shot. Thanks :]

What is the exact make and model of the AT&T modem? I suspect it's a modem/router, if so we'll have to "adjust" the configuration of that router.

it's a Motorola DSL Modem Model 2210
