Linksys WRT110 help

My Linksys router works great when using the LAN or when very close, when i move only 20 feet away or so the connectivity and/or speed go from Excellent and 54 mbps to good or low and 18 or 11 mbps. The linksys tech support people said i needed to upgrade the firmware on the router and to change it to send G signal instead of N, because my wireless card is A/B/G. Well i wasn't paying 30 bucks for that so i upgraded the firmware myself, however i do not know what to do to change what i broadcast. If anyone can help, i would like to either send both G and N signals, or just G. Because my roommates have both G and N, i only have up to G. I don't care about them anyway so....G+N or just G

thanks

Re: Linksys WRT110

Hi and welcome!

Which Linksys router do you have? Model number and revision number please. Located on the bottom of the router usually. You can also get the info from inside the router's configuration.

Usually, I say usually because it may vary depending on which one you actually have, it can be found under WIRELESS, BASIC WIRELESS SETTINGS, WIRELESS NETWORK MODE (dropdown) after you log into the router.

Thanks!

Re: Linksys WRT110

Duh... I'm blind, it only says it in the title right? LOL Sorry about that!

So, it is as described in my first reply.

Log into your router as ADMIN
Click on WIRELESS
Click on BASIC SETTINGS
use the dropdown on NETWORK MODE to select the WIRELESS MODE
Click on SAVE SETTINGS

Thanks and sorry about the dumb question that was already present!

Re: Linksys WRT110

Don't worry about it homie, its all good, I'm just trying to get this problem solved, there is no point in having wireless if its 10 percent efficient.

You helped me out. But on the drop down menu I had it set as MIXED. Just out of curiosity, what was that mixture out of? was it G and N, i chose wireless G, but i was just curious about the "mix"

Re: Linksys WRT110

Mixed means that it accepts all connections in a mixed wireless environment. So, if you have 802.11b and 802.11g in the same area, they will both be able to connect.

Since you chose "G", anyone that does not have "G" abilities on their wireless will not be able to connect or see the connection. From the example above, the 802.11b user would no longer be able to connect or see your WiFi.

You should really try using the different lock speeds - You chose G this time, go back after a few days and lock it to "N" to see if the performance is better or not. It should be better with N.

Re: Linksys WRT110

Good point.... I thought you originally said your card supported N, but they suggested you lock it at G. My bad, leave it at G if that is the highest speed your card will achieve.

Thanks!
