modem working/dlink not working
I have a verizon dsl, westell wirespeed modem and dlink 1310 router. This all worked. I recently moved. I have the same service. I can connect to the internet. When I unhook my ethernet from computer and plug into dlink, I can not get on the internet. I have tried many different things but still can't get on internet, I have to unhook ethernet from dlink and rehook up to computer. I called verizon and they told me just to buy a gateway modem/router. I just don't understand why it worked and now it doesn't. I am at a loss as to what to do or check. Can anyone assist me......... Thanks bunches!!!!!

Re: modem working/dlink not working
Can we start with the exact make and model of the Westell modem? Can you connect directly to the modem and get on-line?
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command: Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command. IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here. Let's see this when you're connected directly to the modem.

Re: modem working/dlink not working
When you connect your PC directly to the westell modem, the IP address assigned is bind to your PC ethernet card MAC address. Then when you connect the dlink router to the westell modem, the modem sees a different MAC and refuses to connect.
You could call up verizon and have them release your IP/MAC address binding. Or leave your modem off long enough (depend on verizon dhcp lease time), it will reset automatically. Or you can use the dlink PC MAC cloning option. Check the manual.

Re: modem working/dlink not working
Your connection will not work with the dlink until verizon removes the binding between the IP and MAC address from your computer ethernet card.

Re: modem working/dlink not working
I refuse to believe that IPCONFIG /ALL display shows a working computer.

Re: modem working/dlink not working
Just tell them you just purchase a router and will be connecting the modem to the router. Tell them to release the IP to MAC address binding for your computer so you can connect the router. I never have to deal with tech support so can't tell you how good they are.
Or you can try powering down the modem before going to bed. Just remember to connect the modem to the router before you power it up in the morning.

Re: modem working/dlink not working
To reset the binding just unplug power from the modem, plug the ethernet into the router, and plug the power back in.

Re: modem working/dlink not working
He tried that already but couldn't get an IP because the binding only gets release when DHCP lease expired or someone at verizon manually release it.

Re: modem working/dlink not working
With that "working connection", please do this.
Try these simple tests. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key: NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands. Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution. IPCONFIG /ALL PING <computer_IP_address> PING <default_gateway_address> PING <dns_servers> PING 74.125.45.100 PING yahoo.com Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard. Paste the results in a message here. <computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. (For Vista/Win7, the IPv4 Address) <default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. <dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
