Modem helper:Card test=green chreck mark Line Detection=green check mark Dial Tone Detection=red X Dialing test=red X The Call Was Not Answered By A Remote Modem. A modem did not answer the call on the other side. The call was answered by either a person or by a device other than a modem (such as a fax machiene or a answering machiene.) I have tried both phone jacks in the living room,I have tried unpluging the answering machiene and still I get the same problem.I have tried a new phone cord from pc to phone jack in computer room . Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem.or do I have to get a new modem signed FRUSTRATED Helppppppp |

Re: Having trouble connecting to the internet
Hi Carrie-Ann,
Is this a dial-up Modem? From your PM I believe so. Can you run Everest (under my signature) and attach the full report to the thread. This will give me an idea of what you have (been awhile) and I will beable to "see" if XP will go on this computer. Bill |

Re: Having trouble connecting to the internet
Hi Carrie-Ann
From your report it shows no errors in your hardware, but it does not tell me if there is something going wrong with the dial-up modem. The other item I saw in your report is the amount of RAM (PC-133) installed (384MB). Although XP will run on this amount, you will improve the performance to the whole system with an additional amount (atleast another 128MB). Are you not able to connect at all using this dial-up modem? Are you able to connect, but get kicked off frequently? Go to the Control Panel Switch to classic view Open the Phone/Modem options icon Highlight the modem and click the Properties button. Click the Advanced tab and then click the Change Default Preferences button. Make sure the Disconnect a call if idle for more than box is unchecked and click Ok. Also, can you give me a screenshot of the Modem Diagnostics? Here is how to post a screenshot: How to post a screenshot. Attached is the report you sent me. Thanks, Bill |

Re: Having trouble connecting to the internet
Hi Carrie-Ann,
Go back to the same screen and select Query Modem. Post what you find under Command Response If you take another screenshot of this you may have to change the name of the file to attach it. Thanks, Bill |

Re: Having trouble connecting to the internet
Hi Carrie-Ann,
I got the report of your Modem Query (See attachment) I am posting the issue you discribed via your e-mail Quote:
I would contact your ISP and see if they are having issues. Other issues that may be causing this is the browser you are using. What browser do you use for the internet (I am assuming it is Internet Explorer) Have you tried a different browser like firefox? Quote:
You would not need to install all 3GB. For XP under normal usage 1 GB should be enough. If it were me I would install an additional 1GB. You have 3 memory slots on this board You have 1 stick of 256MB installed in one slot You have 1 stick of 128MB installed on another slot I would install either 2x512 and remove the 128MB stick (total 1280MB, 1.2GB) or get 1GB and install it in the third empty slot (total 1408MB, 1.4GB). At the minimum I would install atleast 1 stick of 512MB to add to what you have (total 896MB) The only issue here is PC133 memory is expensive when you compare it to other types. Here is some of the better prices I can find (there is no 1GB modules on this site) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...857&name=512MB Bill |

Re: Having trouble connecting to the internet
Hi Carrie-Ann,
Are you sure these sticks of memory are PC-133 RAM Modules? Most local stores such as Staples, Best Buys do not even carry this type of RAM modules in stock (in NY anyway). They consider this type of RAM out dated and do not stock it. If these are PC-133 (1GB Ram) then the price seams to good to be true. Most PC-133 1GB Ram goes for $90.00 a stick. Double check to make sure this RAM is PC-133 168Pin Non-ECC SDRAM Dimm (only RAM this board will take), before you bring in your tower. Bill |

Re: Having trouble connecting to the internet
Did you double check to see if this was the correct Ram (PC-133).
If so and the price is $60.00 for the 2x1GB then go for it. Bill |

Re: Having trouble connecting to the internet
It is easier than installing a sound card.
Here is a guide: http://www.fonerbooks.com/r_ram.htm Just be sure the power is disconnected You touch an unpainted part of the tower after you open the side (discharges static electricity) The RAM Modules only go in one way so make sure you align the notches correctly and do not force them (but you may need a little push to snap them in). Re: Having trouble connecting to the internet
Hi,
No you will loose no info of any kind. Make sure the tower is unplugged from the power source. Open the case and touch an unpainted part of the tower to discharge static electricity. Install the Ram accordingly and reassemble the tower. Remember the RAM only goes in ONE WAY so make sure you line up the slots correctly and gently push the ram in until the locks on the end snap into place. Reboot the computer. Some computers will detect that new ram (different amount) was installed and prompts you to entre the BIOS to confirm. If this happens do so and "see" if the amount you installed is what the computer sees. Save and Exit the BIOS. Then when windows boots up Right click on My Computer>Properties A window will open that should show you the amount of Ram installed as well as the speed of your CPU. The amount of RAM may differ slightly then what you installed, but should be pretty close. Let me know how you make . Bill |

Re: Having trouble connecting to the internet
Nope, they will not work. They are pc3200 (from the first one anyways).
These will not even be close. Totally different type. Local store will not have it, but you may beable to go to a local PC shop. they may have it cheaper (used memory). The type you need is PC-133 (or maybe PC-100 may work, but I do not want you to mix the two), but like I said they are expensive. If anything get a 512MB Stick of PC-133: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...857&name=512MB two 512MB will cost you under $60.00 Bill |
