Internet connection slowed down considerably

Hi there, I've recently been having some problems with my internet connection and have been unable to work out what exactly is causing the problem.

Two weeks ago our old router stopped working and we replaced it. For the first week after getting the new router we had no problems at all.

However, over the last week there has been a significant drop in internet browsing performance, along with online game latencies increasing by 2 or 3 times, and ventrilo pings shooting up into the region of 20 000. I also get periods where i cannot access most websites at all and just get an error.

My first thought was that we had our internet capped, so I ran a speed test using www.speedtest.net. I tested the conection to both London, and to New York to see if it was an overseas issue.

The results showed 1.92 Mb/s download, and 0.39 Mb/s upload speeds to London, and 1.85 Mb/s download and 0.37 Mb/s upload speeds to New York.

I was wondering if this may be a problem with the firewall on the new router? We never had any problems like this with the old router, and all 3 of the computers on the home network have the same issue.

In case it matters, our internet connection is with Virgin Media, and is an 8Mb connection (though it is normally only around 1.8Mb because we are quite a long way from the exchange, though I am working to change that).

If anyone knows what may be causing this, then some help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
