Buffalo WBMR G-54 slow speeds - potentially buy new router

I'm quite confused since when I do a speed test the speed comes as nearly 3mb but browsing pages is very slow and downloading torrents even more so (currently getting speeds of less than 1kbps). Can anyone suggest what the problem might be?

My router is connected via a 20m extension to the phone line so that it can be upstairs and broadcast to the whole house. The phone socket downstairs is in a corner surrounded by thick walls and so if I keep it there range to the house is limited. The connection was probably more stable when it was downstairs but the wireless coverage is not good.
Is it possible to get a router with increased range within wireless G? Most people say the best way to extend wireless range is MIMO or draft-N but the problem is that I do not have MIMO or draft-N wireless cards in any of my laptops or computers. If I do buy a MIMO router will it extend the range if used with G cards or will it not make a difference?
Does anyone have any other suggestions of how to maintain stability and speed of connection but maximise range?

Try changing the channel in the router, to 1, 6, or 11 for wireless connections.
Are these slow connections occuring only on wireless, or wired also?
If both, then try resetting the modem and router.
