Can only connect with ie8 on vista 64 bit

I am unable to connect to the internet in Vista 64 bit in all programs except explorer 8. I have tried everythiinng I can think of and nothing has worked. Please help.

Have you checked your firewall settings to see if the other programs are being blocked?

Not sure how to do that. But I have turned off my firewall and it did not help

What are the other programs that can't connect?

Do you get any error messages or do they just time out?

What modem/router and firewall are you using? Are you connecting wirelessly?

Is the connection speed in IE8 as you would expect or slower than usual?

I cannot connect with firefox, chrome, safari, or any games or even explorer 64 bit.
They tell me that they cannot establish a connection to the server. I am connected wirelessly through a linksys wrt110 router and have only had both the router and laptop a week or so. Explorer actually runs pretty fast.
