Network won't assign IP address
All of a sudden my laptop cannot connect to my wireless router, although it did so previously (and I don't recall monkeying with any of the settings).
I am using a Dell Inspiron 1501, running XP. The wireless router is a Netgear MR814 v2. I connect to the router via the Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Minicard. I get an error message saying that the network won't assign an IP address. All of the diagnostic tests show that the Dell minicard is working okay, and I have been successful in connecting through a neighborhood connection that has no security encryption (though this is unreliable, due to faint signal). I have checked that I am correctly set to automatically ask for the IP address and DNS server address. I am able to get online normally through the cable at the office. There are four other laptops in the household - two PCs and two MACs, and all are able to get online through the Netgear router. Any ideas would be much appreciated. (I apologize in advance, but unfortunately I would need step-by-step instructions as to where to click to find the various utilities or settings. Sorry.) |

Could you give us the specific error message? Have you always had that many other computers connecting? Or has the number recently increased? >(and I don't recall monkeying with any of the settings). Is it possible anyone made changes to the Router settings recently? Have you tried power cycling the router and any modem? Are you running an up-to-date anti-virus product? Open a command window. Start, Run, enter CMD and hit enter. Type ipconfig. What is your "ip address"? Last edited by Suncoast; 09-02-2009 at 04:50 PM. Reason: afterthought |
