cisco 857 excessive dropouts adsl 2+
Hi All,
Having major problems with a cisco 857 configured for vpn and as a gateway. Was running a standard speed touch dmz router with no problems but upgraded to cisco becuase i had to build vpn between two sites. However the cisco drops sync about every 2-3 hours even though I have lowered my speed from 24000kbs to 8000kbs. It loses all rx data and rewuires a reboot to sync up again. the ios is 12.4t and the ads firmware is 3.010 which should be adsl 2 compatable atm is on auto. This is really annoying and if some one could offer any assistance it would be appreciated. I am seriously considering swapping out both ciscos for higher end dmz's as cisco really seams to be overpriced low tolerence over complex junk. I am willing to post any information from router required cheers |

Re: cisco 857 excessive dropouts adsl 2+
When you lose RX data, your TX data is probably going nowhere as well. It's possible one of the DSLAM line cards at the Telco is going bad, a local loop has been damaged, or something was not configured properly on the 857's settings.
I would do two things. I would contact your DSL Loop provider and ask them to test both the DSL Loops. If the loops check out, you should contact the Company that sold you these routers for support. That reseller should support you and get that router working the way you want it, or they're not doing their job well. They may not have been setup properly, including the fact that they won't automatically negotiate a new session when the line drops. Unless the line drops more often at higher speeds, I would crank the speed back up to 24mbps. You may as well go fast while your up. Last edited by Suncoast; 08-31-2009 at 06:56 PM. Reason: typo |

Re: cisco 857 excessive dropouts adsl 2+
Thanks Suncoast, can I just ask one more thing. Looking at the lights on the cisco when i have the problem, the sync light stays solid just know rx data. Its like it just hangs. Do you think its most likely a faulty router. Its the only one we didnt buy new its from another office and about 7 years old. I too cant work out why it wouldnt negotiate a new connection. I have contacted the reseller and he thinks its a line issue but according to the cisco atm readings noise margins and attenuation look actually very good.

Re: cisco 857 excessive dropouts adsl 2+
For some reason I was under the impression you had new units. I'm guessing the vendor declined to support a 7 year old unit?
You mention a "sync light." I found on Cisco a description of the LEDs for your units here. Also general information from the same document here. Normally, you should see a solid CD (carrier detect.) When the unit loses carrier, the CD light will slowly blink on and off, or it will go off completely. I agree with your vendor. It's almost always a local loop issue. Can you still access the router itself when the connection goes down? If so, then it is unlikely the unit has locked up. If your DSL line also has voice, you may be able to hear static or pinging noise on that line. These would be indications of a line (local loop) problem. How do your two DSL connections talk to each other? Are these going over the Internet? Or do you have your own PVC? (Private Virtual Circuit.) Because this is another part of the link that may be having problems. However, problems here generally affect many users at once. This Microsoft Technet article may be of interest to you.
