Aopen FM56-PX connects but wont register

I just purchased a new FM56-PX modem for use at my cottage where the phone lines are terrible and DSL is non existant. I installed the modem, used the drivers from the CD, set up my new connection, changed the settings as suggested by my ISP to match their requirements and tried to connect. Got dial tone, dialing, warble tone, static hiss verifying user name and password message, then nothing till the 60sec. auto disconnect. Error message said no response at server end. I am assuming the "handshake" failed. Have an old Aopen winmodem that will(sort of) work there, tried using similar settings( it's in a box using win2000pro) but no go.
This modem uses v.92 , but I think sympatico only supports v.90 could this be the problem and if so what can I do to fix it? My wife is living there and can't live without her e-mail and I might not live long if I cant fix it for her lol.

Hi,

Give this a try:

1) Download the newest and latest drivers from the modem manufacturer’s website. (I know, you have a disk, but download the newest and best anyhow.

2) Enter Start, Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager and DELETE any references to any modem.

3) Shut down and physically remove the modem and then put the modem back in PCI slot #3 (Third slot down from the AGP slot)

4) Boot up and enter the BIOS setup menu.

5) In the BIOS setup menu find the PnP area. If you are running WinXP, then DISABLE Pnp….however, if you are using Win98, then make sure it is ENABLED.

6) Save and Exit

7) Boot back up and when the computer finds your modem, then load the drivers that have been downloaded from the manufacturer’s website. It may tell you that the latest and best are already installed, but install them anyway. (for example, WinXP only has v.90 drivers and not the most recent v.92 that are needed for best operation) If it says they are not digitally signed, then load them anyway. This is a long story, but I can assure you it is a money issue and a rip off from Microsoft in my opinion.

This should get you going!

Addendum: Even though your ISP only supports v.90, you still need to follow this process.

Thanks Mark: Tried all that after reading a previous post here. My mobo only has 3 pci slots, there are 2 special adapter slots below the AGP slot so that I can upgrade from socket A to socket 754 processor. My blaster card is in the bottom slot, but the modem is using com3 . Still wont make connection with remote server. Have tried in town as well, tried a number of init strings, still no handshake. No help from Aopen site. Took modem back and will be getting a USR pro hardware modem! Thanks again for your help.

BTW seems cd driver and only driver I can find on Aopen site are the same, both dated 2002 as I recall.
