Linksys Router Issues
Summary: Router shows internet connection, laptop picks up connection, no internet is actually transmitted. Help!
Alright, I looked to see if I could find another thread with a similar issue but I couldn't find one. I have a rather basic question, so hopefully someone can help me. I live in an apartment complex, and for the past two years internet has been provided to us and my flatmate and I have been using a Linksys WRT54G router with absolutely no problem. And then the complex switched ISP's. With the old one, we were prompted to register our router's MAC address with the provider. Once done, it worked flawlessly. Our current provider does not request the MAC addresses, but when a computer first connects to the internet, the user must open a browser window to complete the connection - all indicators will say that an internet connection has been established, but no messenger protocols or email clients will work until a browser is opened and a redirect page for the ISP pops up. Then all is well. My router, when plugged into the wall, shows internet connectivity. It even broadcasts - my laptop picks up the wireless network. No internet is transmitted. We've tried resetting the router several times and it does nothing. I even changed the MAC address on my computer to match the router's, plugged into the wall, passed the redirect page, then plugged the router in to try and trick the internet that way (the redirect page is only necessary for the first time a new MAC address hooks up, otherwise the connection is full and instantaneous.) Still does not work. (Changed my address back, of course.) We have also plugged the router into the wall and then plugged a laptop into one of the ports on the back to see where the problem was - no internet went through, so something is choking up inside the router. I have been fiddling with my router settings, DHCP versus PPPoE, in case the provider is different, but I don't know enough about these sorts of things to know which is being used without calling the company, which I have a difficult time doing. (In a phrase, their tech support is absolutely useless and will not help. That's why I'm here.) How can I make sure all my preferences and options are set properly on the router? And are there any other ideas about what I can try to make this work? Am I missing something really, really obvious? Thank you for taking the time to read this.
