problems with comcast modem
I have recently signed up with comcast and our relationship has started out pretty bad. I was wondering if there was a reason why my computer will not detect the modem via ethernet or usb. I know the modem works because I can connect a ethernet to my xbox 360. Please let me know what I can do ASAP thank you!!!

Re: problems with comcast modem
and welcome to the ForumHow did you connect before you got the Comcast modem? . . you may have some old settings that need to be changed. Have you tried powercycling the modem?

Re: problems with comcast modem
I've not worked with Charter . . do they require a logon and password? Your router may be doing that for you and it is not needed with Comcast

Re: problems with comcast modem
Did you have a router with the Charter connection? are you using one now?
The Comcast modem will not allow internet sharing between multile pc's . . you need a router for that.

Re: problems with comcast modem
Probably not if it will not connect when directly connected to the modem.
Try this: With the pc connected to a freshly powercycled modem and pc, ( Turn off both, turn on the modem and let the lights stabilize, then turn on the pc ) Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD At the > prompt type type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command. Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Come back here and Paste the results in a message. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: problems with comcast modem
I am having the same problem with comcast. They told me it was my computer, but I bought my computer new from Dell. I am going to have to go back to Qwest. I never had a problem with Qwest, with the exception of their billing dept. I was told to get a USB to Eathernet Adapter, but for a week now I am unable to find one.
Let me know if you figure this out. K |

Re: problems with comcast modem
The modem is not passing an IP address 169.254.117.226 is a default address.
You seem to be using Local Area Connection 4 . . in Network Connections, how many Local Area Connections do you see? Try this . . In Network Connections, delete all the Local Area Connections . . then in Device Manager, remove the Network Adaptor. Reboot to let Windows "Discover" the Network Adaptor and load the drivers. Reboot again and try the connection to the modem

When I went to reinstall the driver it came up as local area connection 6 and said it has limited or no connection. im really confused and am starting to get frusterated.
