Wireless 150 USB adapter problem
Okay folks I've got a new problem.
I thought I had solved my wireless adapter problem as stated in this thread Connected to wireless network but internet does not work but it turned out it was only temporary. Long story short I happened to be at the local office supply store and found a D-Link DWA-125 on sale and thought I would give it a try (14 day return policy). Hopefully there will be an easy solution. I first uninstalled everything associated with the old 2Wire wireless adapter. I followed the instructions to install the new USB wireless adapter as included in the box. I inserted the CD and followed the instructions. I got to the point where the instructions told me to plug in the USB adapter and if the New Hardware Found Wizard starts up I should click cancel and continue with installing from the CD. Since the 'New Hardware...' did not pop up I went ahead and clicked 'continue' and the CD continued it's work. While this was going on Windows decided to install drivers all by itself and gave me the pop up that said the device was installed but may not function properly until I reboot and would I like to reboot now. I clicked 'no' since the CD was still plugging away. When the CD was done it did not require a reboot and I was hooked up to the internet just fine. When I did reboot it appears that windows finished its install and the wireless connection was there but I could not get on the internet. So after a little searching I disabled the 'Shell Hardware Detection' in hopes that Windows would not automatically install the device. I also disabled 'Wireless Zero Configuration' since the D-Link software is there to manage the connection. I reinstalled the USB device in the same manner and everything happened exactly the same, except I have not rebooted yet since the internet is working and I don't ever want to shut this thing off. Is this a simple fix? Is there an easy way to stop Windows from automatically installing the USB device? Is that really my problem? Will I put a hammer through this laptop if I reboot and I have no internet again? Thank you, Jim |
