Linksys WRT54G dies when sudden increase in internet usage

Okay so when I'm surfing the web, I usually set my download speed on uTorrent at 50kbps (from a usual of 180-210kbps). When I put it back to unlimited however, and the download speed jumps back up to usual, the internet suddenly dies.
If I go look at the modem, the activity/connection lights show it's perfectly fine, and if I just reset the router everything starts working again like it used to. I have a laptop with windows vista home premium (32bit) and connect by wifi.
Does anyone know what might by up with it?

Have you checked the Linksys website to see if your running the most current version of firmware? You will need to look at the underside of the Linksys to get the version number first.

I did...it's ver. 7, and the site seems to have an option of every firmware but that one.. Could it be something to do with the settings? DMZ, MTU, anything like that?

Re: Linksys WRT54G dies when sudden increase in internet usage

Are you sure it's version 7? Not the current firmware release, but the Hardware version. Because the site says they skipped 7. Or maybe it was just never released. I had someone with a WRT54GS Level 4 that would lock up when too many SYN requests came through it to their web server. A firmware update resolved the issue.

And no, DMZ and MTU settings would not cause this if the settings work at a lower speed. And MTU should always be 1500 unless your ISP advises you to use a different value.

Re: Linksys WRT54G dies when sudden increase in internet usage

Yeah, I've kept it at 1500.
well, I followed the instructions on the Linksys site, I checked the label at the bottom, and it said version 7. If you wiki the WRT54G, you'll see there is a version 7, yet on the official site it has no option. But that does sound like the problem I was having.. Should I try some other firmware?

Re: Linksys WRT54G dies when sudden increase in internet usage

Maybe it's a WRT54GS? There is a 7.0 and 7.2 version of that one. The S stands for Speedboost. You'll see that on the Wireless settings page if you have one. I've heard of people "bricking" their routers by using the wrong firmware version. So please don't experiment with other firmware levels. The levels represent different combination's of hardware components and manufacturers inside the router,

Another thing I've successfully done with Linksys routers is to just reset them to factory defaults and set them up again. For some reason they sometimes get confused and do weird things. Resetting them puts them back in working order.

Re: Linksys WRT54G dies when sudden increase in internet usage

This is a common issue with routers with using uTorrent, and I don't think you can do much about it, except of course to uninstall uTorrent. In addition, we cannot help with problems involving P2P programs (check the TSF rules.)
