Router Problem

hi hope somebody can help. i have just purchased a tp-link dsl router to work with my cable modem (broadband suppplied by virgin media)
my main pc is running windows xp sp2 and works ok directly connected to the cable modem via ethernet
however if i have the connection modem > router > pc windows xp wont boot. the xp loading screen appears but as the dashes go across they suddenly freeze and begin running really slow. the only way i can complete the boot up is by plugging the cable directly from modem to pc, alternatively if i unplug the power from both modem & router and attach at the xp login screen it works fine
as this set up is for my mother i want it to be as simple as possible so i can just switch on without any problems - please help
