help please with dialup modem

i've just installed a US Robotics v.92 PCI fax modem and can't get it to work properly. it has the latest drivers installed and is running on a brand new Vostro 200 PC with Microsoft XP Pro installed

When I run hyperterminal and call a number to test the modem just makesa click click click click sound as if its trying over and over to connect but the "no dialtone" is soon returned.

I also get the no dialton error when I run the "Query modem" via the modem properties.

I test the actual line with a telephone and can hear the dialtone and make and recieve telephone calls as normal.

I've run out of ideas now and would be so grateful for any assistance?

thanks a lot

Re: help please with dialup modem

In the modem properties check to make sure you have pulse or tone dialing selected. Most areas have tone dialing and if you have it set on pulse that could be causing this.

Re: help please with dialup modem

It's important to know more about your "click" noises.

Open up hyperterm and try to dial a number. Try 5 (the number 5, not 5 numbers). So after it dials the number 5, do you hear 5 quick, consecutive clicks? If so, let's try it again, this time try the number 9. Do you hear 9 quick, consecutive clicks?

If so, you're set to pulse dialing, as the poster above me stated.

If not, and no matter which number(s) you dial, you hear the same amount of clicks, it sounds like your modem is unable to pick up the line. Try to remove any phone jack splitters you may have, and try a new phone cord just to see if that lets you around it. If so, you have a bad wire or splitter. If not, you may have a faulty modem.
