High latency, Lost packets, Random speed
Problem (short): My internet speed sucks.
Problem (long): I'm getting slow download speeds on sites like Youtube. I'm also getting very high latency for games like World of Warcraft. It gets to the point where playing online games or viewing videos becomes nearly impossible. Due to lagging out, programs will often disconnect on their own. Gear: Operating System: Windows XP Modem/Router: Siemens SpeedStream 6520 Ethernet Card: D-Link DFE 530TX PCI There are currently 3 computers connected to the router, all via Ethernet cables. I also have the option of using Wireless, and I've tested it out with the same results. Line Quality Testing: http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2539426 Speedtest.net: http://www.speedtest.net/result/511570229.png I've noticed that it gets much worse when someone on the other PC loads up a Bittorrent program. After I close the program, my main computer is still suffering from lag. Things I've tried: Restarting the PC Restarting the modem (via online interface) Restarting the modem (via unplugging the hardware) Release/Renew IP Flushing the DNS Uninstall/Reinstall Ethernet card drivers Clearing temporary files And there might be some other things that I can't remember at the moment. I've tried calling my ISP, and they will be sending in a technician tomorrow because there was something wrong with the "line". They were also ripping us off and giving us less Mbps than what we purchased, so hopefully that has been adjusted. However, it still seems like my computer gets the least amount of resources. The other computers can get up to 4.0 mbps, whereas mine struggles at 2.0 mbps. I don't think the speedtest site accurately shows how unplayable some of these movies and games are. The technician might be able to sort some things out, but I don't understand why my PC isn't sharing the resources equally with the other computers. The problem has been going on for roughly 2 weeks. Let me know if you need any more system specs or other information, and I will do my best to get it. Thank you for your time and patience. |

Re: High latency, Lost packets, Random speed
The technician came in and replaced a faulty (ancient) wire in the basement level. He also made some adjustments to the main "box" (dunno what it's really called) across the street and we had a faulty phone jack fixed. Adjustments were also made on the side of the ISP.
We'll be upgrading to the highest speed they have available in two days. However, my PC still gets the least amount of resources, struggling to get 2 mbps as long as there are two other PCs plugged in. Is there anything I can do to help ease this? |

Re: High latency, Lost packets, Random speed
You probably need a better router with bandwidth management.
