Which Broadband modem router for Vista 64Bit?
UK based post.
My Tiscali broadband, SAGEM 800 BT landline modem does not work with my new Windows Vista Home Premium 64Bit computer. It works perfectly with Windows XP. Tiscali tell me their Vista upgrade drivers do not support Vista 64Bit and they cannot give a date at this time when 64Bit will be supported. So, I am forced to purchase a modem router. Here's the question then: Please can someone advise me which modem router to purchase. I have experienced enough frustration with not being able to connect my fabulous new PC to the internet without adding to that frustration by buying the wrong modem router! So, I need a modem router to use with Tiscali Broadband via BT landline and Vista Home Premium 64Bit machine. Broadband speed is 'up to' 8Mbps. Yes, I can ask a hopefully knowledgeable shop assistant, but thought I'd run it by you guys first. Your help GREATLY appreciated! Many thanks. |

Re: Which Broadband modem router for Vista 64Bit?
I'm curious why they would say that it doesn't work with Vista-64. Perhaps you need to try a few compatibility changes first.
Changes that may help to increase the compatibility of Vista with older networking devices: Disable the IP Helper service: 1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter 2. Scroll down to the IP Helper service, right click on it and select Properties 3. In the dropdown box that says "Automatic" or "Manual", set it to Disabled and then click on "Apply" 4. Then click on "Stop" to stop the service from running in the current session 5. Click OK to exit the dialog Disable IPv6: 1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "ncpa.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter 2. Right click on each network connection and select "Properties" 3. Remove the checkmark from the box next to "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) 4. Click OK to exit the dialog NOTE: You should do this for each network connection. Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag: Link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928233
NOTE2: (GUID) is a mnemonic for the individual subkeys, the actual text "GUID" does not appaer. The only program I'm aware of that currently relies on IPv6 is the new Windows Meeting Space. The first 2 changes will cause that program not to work - but will leave all of your normal (IPv4) connections unaffected. If it causes problems that you can't overcome, simply revert back to the original settings.

Re: Which Broadband modem router for Vista 64Bit?
Many thanks for your reply and very sorry for taking so long to respond.
I bought a router modem and problem solved. No mention of 64Bit support in router spec so I got the guy to agree to a full refund if the device didn't work. It works. An error free, easy set-up. Thanks again. |
