WRT54GC - Lynksys Router not working properly.

I've had this router for years, but after turning my computer off then turning it back on an hour later, my internet wasn't connected. I power cycled the router and modem, which lead me to find out that it was my router that is causing the problem. I can bypass it and just plug my modem into the computer. However, if I try and hook my router up, I get a "this connection has limited connection" bubble. I've hit the reset button multiple times, I've restarted everything in the correct power cycle, and even went to lynksys' site and their support wasn't much help. Any suggestions?

Re: WRT54GC - Lynksys Router not working properly.

Some things you can try here, listed in the order you should try them.
  1. For wireless connections, remove all the stored wireless profiles and search for networks. You'll have to enter the encryption key again, which is sometimes the issue for connection problems.
  2. For wireless connections, change the channel on the router, I like channels 1, 6, and 11 in the US.
  3. For wireless connections, try moving either the wireless router/AP or the wireless computer. Even a couple of feet will sometimes make a big difference.
  4. Update the network drivers (wired and wireless) on your computer to the latest available.
  5. Update the firmware to the latest version available on the manufacturer's site.
  6. Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.

Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues.

Re: WRT54GC - Lynksys Router not working properly.

Ok, my router isn't wireless, so I started with 4.
However, I'm having trouble updated both the netowrk drivers and firmware. I found that my router doesn't have the latest firmware, but I can't figure out how to update it. I found the download file, but it's just a text document. How do I actually apply it to my router?

Re: WRT54GC - Lynksys Router not working properly.

I wouldn't worry about the firmware. It worked for you recently. If you've had the router for a few years, I'd suggest trying a new one (which you should be able to return if a new router doesn't fix your problem). Most routers I've owned seem to slowly go bad at the 2 year mark (ESPECIALLY Linksys).

Just to be thorough...
Shut down your computer.
Unplug modem and router power.
Wait 15 seconds.
Plug in modem power.
Wait 1 minute.
Plug in router power.
Turn computer on.

I know it sounds dumb, but going by that *exact* order has solved a ton of issues for me when I did technical support for high speed internet.

If that doesn't solve it, then yeah, try a new router.
