Dial up problem

I use a 56k modem on vista. The problem I have is occasionally it just stops working. It says it is still connected but it doesn't even try to load pages, send emails etc. It just instantly tells me it could not connect. Sometimes I could be on msn chatting fine but then when I open my browser it wont load pages. Same thing has happened with firefox and internet explorer.

Disconnecting and re-connecting does not fix it, only way to fix it I have found is to reboot my PC.

Any ideas of how to prevent this would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Dial up problem

I'd start by looking for different modem drivers.

Re: Dial up problem

I downloaded an update of my driver but it hasn't fixed the problem. Thanks for the help anyway!

Re: Dial up problem

The modem may be failing, perhaps a new modem is the answer?

Re: Dial up problem

What do you think the odds are of it being the modem? It is just that I do not want to take it into the shop if I don't need to. As far as I know it could be the software, modem, phone line, or ISP. Could you rule any of those out?

Re: Dial up problem

No, I can't rule anything out, and the phone lines are always a top suspect with dial-up issues. The way to narrow it down is try it in different locations.

John, back years ago while I was working for the Phone Co, I asked the lady if she could take her computer to another location to try it. She offered to bring it to the Phone Switching office (rural area, small town) so she brings a whole desktop computer CRT and all (in the trunk of her car) to me to test. I obliged and if I remember correctly she had some kind of issue with her home phone line, but the computer worked properly. Anyone that would haul a desktop system complete like that was a real trooper.

True, but this might be a laptop.

Re: Dial up problem

Please check and make sure you have the modem baud rate set to 56700 in both places if I remember correctly you will want to follow the following paths.

1.)Open control panel>phone and modem options>modems then in Vista I think you need to click on change settings then properties now the modem tab again>max port speed should be at 576000

2.)Open control panel>Internet Options>connections and click on your dialup connection hopefully you only have one connection there or know which one it is you currently use you can delete all old connections and should do it>click settings>properties>configure Maximum Speed (bps) should read 57600 here as well.

No I use a desktop :)

Although I do not think it will be the phone line as my previous computer did not have this issue on this phone line.

Re: Dial up problem

Dial up issues can be a headache to deal with. Phone co isnt always interested in helping slow modem issues.
If you plug a phone in and hear any static, thats a sign the issue is on the phone line.
If its quiet it can still be the phone line. You could call them and ask for a line test without a dispatch.

Re: Dial up problem

Chances are the problems lies in either your modem driver version you have installed the phone line or the modem itself.

Re: Dial up problem

Think it has nothing to do with vista? Personally I had a hunch it was vista as when I first started using it I noticed it would quite often change from "Access: Local and Internet" to "Access: Local only", which basically meant it was 'connected', just not to the internet. So I would have to disconnect from that and then re-dial.

It no longer does that, it just has this new problem instead. My previous computer was on XP and had no problems like this at all, which is why i'm not so sure on the phone line being the culprit, even though I live in a rural area.

I will do another search for modem drivers even though the last one was quite painful from the amount of sites wanting me to download their program rather than the driver. Also will search for an external modem I can borrow to test this.

Once again, thanks to everyone who has helped so farm even though the problem has not been resolved I am thankful for your efforts.
