problems establishing a dial up connection!!!! yes i did say dial up

I have a dell inspiron 1525 and normally connect to the the interent on sky broadband, however I been experience connection problems and am now trying to setup a backup Dial Up connection.

OS: Win Vista home edition
modem: conexant hda d330 mdc v.92 modem
browser: IE8

When i am trying to establish a dial up connection i am getting an error message stating that either the modem is in use or is not configured correctly. I have never used the modem on this laptop before. All the drivers for the modem are uptodate and device manager says the device is working correctly!

If anyone could give me any ideas as to how I can't establish a dial up connection I would be really grateful as its starting to drive me mad!!

Re: problems establishing a dial up connection!!!! yes i did say dial up

Are you connecting the proper cable (RJ-11) from your laptop to the phone jack in your house?

Do you have dial-up service from the ISP, and the phone number, username and pwd are correct?

Re: problems establishing a dial up connection!!!! yes i did say dial up

Yes I do have the correct cable and i have been trying to use a free dial up which i have tested by actuall phoning from the landline to ensure the number is valid however when I try to establish the connection via the laptop I am not even hearing the computer attempting to dial the number (I have the modem volume set to max) which if i remember correctly I should hear the computer dialing

Re: problems establishing a dial up connection!!!! yes i did say dial up

Try deleting you current dial up connection from Network Connections and set up a new one.

Open up the New Connection Wizard, Connect to the Internet, Set up my Connection Manually, Connect using a Dial Up Modem, Give it a name, Type the Phone in, then username & password.

Also, I believe you have already checked Hardware Features under the connection's properties window; Did you enable the modem's speaker (Not just volume)?

Re: problems establishing a dial up connection!!!! yes i did say dial up

Fire up Hyperterminal and configure a direct connection to the modem's COM port. Type ATA into Hyperterminal, it should pick up the phone line. If not, the modem probably has a problem.

To see if you're talking to the modem, you can type ATI into Hyperterminal, you should get an OK prompt at a minimum back from the modem.

Did you run the diagnostics in Device Manager on the modem and see if the modem is responding?
