Cry Can't Connect to ADSL

Hi All,

I have 2 laptops at home, one of which won't connect. Here goes:

My Toshiba laptop (Vista) was working fine up until 2 days ago. I simply turned my laptop on and was not able to view any websites or access email via Outlook.

My Netgear ADSL has all of the lights on the modem and when plugged the ethernet cable into my other laptop, it worked fine (thats what im using at the moment) - No dramas there, so I know something is wrong with my Toshiba laptop. This is what I have done so far:

Since I couldn't view any web pages, I checked my device manager and it had an exclamation point beside "wan mini port" and an X on the connection in my tray. I wasn't able to access my modem site when I typed it in to my web browser.

I went into the ADSL connection properties - TCP/IP and typed in an IP/DNS setting (IT friend of mine provided that prior to leaving). Unfortunately I still wasn't able to view websites, but it did remove the X from the network connection and I was then able to login to the modem via my web brower. I was then told it could be the actual ethernet port, so I went out and purchased PC Ethernet adaptor, but that still hasn't been able to fix it.

I have also disabled my firewall/antivirus - still not working.

Usually when I used to plug the ethernet in to the laptop, it would detect it right away, but now it doesn't.

I hope I have explained this properly? if not, please let me know if there is anything else I can clarify.

I'm really stuck and need to get this working!!

Any ideas???

Connect with a wired connection to a known good router port with a tested cable.


TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, All Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.



Let's see this next.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Well, I don't see any evidence of your wireless connection there, so that explains why it won't connect.

For the wired connection, try booting in Safe Mode with Networking and see if you can connect that way. Post another IPCONFIG /ALL in safe mode.

I'm no sure how to boot in safe mode?

Could you give me the steps for this?

Tap on the F8 key during the BIOS POST and BEFORE Windows start to load, you'll get a boot menu with the choices.
