Mistake key packets

Hi I keep getting kicked on farcry pc game... The reason is that I am "loosing key packets" ???
I am not sure if the reason is because my son is on his xbox live at the same time. I have a 750 broadband connecting through cable and wireless.
They are both routed through a modem.
We both have our own ip address.
I am not sure what packet loss means.....

Any advise would be a benefit.
Thanks

Packets are the little pieces of data that computers send to each other over the internet. Packet loss is when a packet doesn't get to its destination.

It doesn't seem like much, but when you think of how many packets go flying back and forth (a packet, especially a gaming one, will be about 512 bytes- letters- or less), 2% is a whole lot of packets.

As to the cause, I don't think it could be caused by the xbox being on at the same time- it's probably just the wireless connection being less than it should. If you move the WAP (wireless access point) closer to the computer or vice-versa, does the packet loss improve?

Confused not sure

not sure what to move closer, do you mean move the modem closer to the computer. I have the modem connected in my sons room and there is 10 metres cable between the modem and the computer, do you mean there could be a packet loss there ?
when i say cable and wireless, that is the provider, all my services are provided through a cable, not a satellite dish.
The main cable that comes into the house is in my sons room which is 10 metres from my computer. could this be the cause, or should i contact my provider.
thanks

What I'm saying is that the packet loss could be caused by your wireless network. Is the computer affected by this wired to the router or is it wireless?

Exclamation no wireless

As far as I know there is no part of my connection that is wireless, I have cable comes into house then straight to modem and then straight to computer all via straight through leads.

That's why I thought your problem was with a wireless connection.

I was just under the impression that the computer affected by this was using wireless, since some degree of packet loss is common with wireless networks.

There's a fairly easy way to diagnose this, and I found a nice tutorial here
