Sudden Loss of Latency

Hello and thank you to anyone that has any info for me.

System Specs

OS: Vista Home Premium 64 Bit
MODEM: Scientific AtlantaDPC2100R2 Modem
MOBO:Foxconn P45A-S
Processor: E8400
Video Card: 8800GT XFX Alpha Dog Edition
RAM: 4 gigs DDR2 Kingston 1066 Hyper X ram

So anyways I play a lot of games using STEAM I play CSS and TF2 and DOW2
My internet speed is normal from what I can tell but with using steam I get anywhere from 160-420 ms latency, it used to never go over 80 and ive been playing on the same servers for at least a year.

List of things ive done to try and fix it:

#1. Ran AVG and Mcafee for trojans and spyware it found some cookies and I deleted them and still have high latency didnt change it at all.
#2. Ran AdAware for spyware deleted all cookies.
#3. called ISP they say that everything is fine.
#4. Unplugged modem for 20 seconds plugged it back in.
#5. Uninstalled and reinstalled ethernet drivers.

Yeah so I tried all of this and nothing has worked. If anyone has any ideas shoot them by me and I will try them. Thank you

Re: Sudden Loss of Latency

Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.

Re: Sudden Loss of Latency

Hi,

there is a ping hack on the blog on this site www.pinghack.com that might help fix your latency problem.

Try that and tell me if it works

Re: Sudden Loss of Latency

Well I really dont know what to do anymore its been a constant battle and nothing seems to work. I dont know if i mentioned this but I have cable internet at a 1 meg speed. My latency is just really wierd some days im constant 70 -80 ms others im 150-400 and the funny thing is that i called my ISP and they came out and noticed my signal strength was only 28 and they like it to be near 40 so they fixed that and hmmmm wouldnt you know it my ping got WORSE??????? how does that happen???? I dont know what to do anymore just for a little more info I am running Vista hom premium 64 bit on a foxconn P45A-S MOBO running off realtek ethernet drive from on board network. I dont really know what to do ive tried everything from buying programs that help boost my internet speed to doing full registry cleaners and malware bytes ive killed a lot of stuff but internet continues to screw up. Its almost like something is interfering with my internet cause it will run smooth then it will kinda glitch out then jump like 200 ping then slowly come back down then lag then shoot back up 200 ms again i dont know any more help will be good thx.

Re: Sudden Loss of Latency

This sure sounds like an ISP issue.

Perhaps if you had run the line quality tests I requested we'd have better information.

Re: Sudden Loss of Latency

Well, it doesn't appear to be your ISP or modem, the line quality there was clean.

Have you tried a wired connection to see if this is a wireless issue?

Re: Sudden Loss of Latency

There is latency in the middle of the network, but that's an ISP or network infrastructure issue, not yours.

Re: Sudden Loss of Latency

I don't think there's anything you can do about the latency you mentioned in the tests, it's not within your control.

Re: Sudden Loss of Latency

Well I thank you for all your help and I have come to the conclusion that its all my ISP and none of my computer like you say considering I just did a fresh install of vista and my ping is bouncing like crazy from 70-160 to 600 !!!! So I am canceling my Cable internet and going with my only other option in this area which Is Qwest DSL ill get 1.5 meg dl and 800 kb upload and am really hoping for better latency since im a gamer. Thx again.
