Wireless confusion!
Hi
This may have been covered in a sort-of way previously, but I just need some confirmation to put my mind at ease. Scenario is that I have desktop PC which is currently connected to an ADSL modem. It's an old-ish PC of about 6 years now, and I don't believe there is a wireless card installed. I am about to purchase a laptop (Linux) and would like to use the laptop to connect wirelessly to the internet with the help of my PC. I need some help/advice on my shopping list, as well as any other general advice please. My understanding is that I will need: 1) For the laptop, a Wireless Networking card (?) 2) For the PC, a USB Network Adaptor or a Wireless Networking Card (?) 3) A Wireless Router/Modem (?) Is this correct? Cheers & thanks. |

Re: Wireless confusion!
If the laptop is new/modern it will likely have Wireless built in. check before you buy!
The PC already has a network card in it. You need a Wireless Router/modem. The PC doesn't require any Wireless card unless you wish to use it wireless. N.B. Check that the version of Linux on the laptop is 100% Wireless compatible. Reason, I play around with different versions of Linux and it's not as easy as Windows to setup. ( The best/easiest version I have come across is Puppy Linux 4.1, although I doubt you'll be offered that). |

Re: Wireless confusion!
Many thanks Eddie, that's brilliant!
The laptop is coming with Windows Vista installed (shudder) so I plan to install Fedora over the top of it and hope that the new installation will pick up all of the hardware for me (everything crossed). I spoke to the Red Hat gurus and they insist that this will work, in fact the guy I spoke to had Fedora on his laptop with a Netgear card installed and he said it works just fine - let's hope so. Many thanks again, cheers. |
