Can't Connect to Internet on PC
A friend of mine is having trouble connecting to the internet on his computer. All he is getting is a connection to an unidentified network with no connectivity. He just bought it a few months ago and the operating system is Vista Home Premium and is using no router. He said the internet worked fine when it was first installed then about three weeks ago it quit working all together. It is not the modem, wires, or isp because he gets a good connection to his ps3. I messed with it for an hour the other day and could not figure anything out. I called Cox (his isp) and they were major jack***** and were no help and said to just reformat his computer. I tried running some commands through the command prompt but when it did it would say something along the lines of " this requires elevation". I asked him if the user account I was logged onto was the administrator account and he said yes but he really doesn't know anything about comps so I guess my question is, will it not let you run commands if your not on the administrator account? I did not even think about it the other day to make sure it was the administrator account. Also if you have any other suggestions please let me know. Thanks

Re: Can't Connect to Internet on PC
If you are connecting directly to a modem, only one device can connect at a time. Also, you MUST cycle power to the modem for 30 seconds whenever you change the attached device.
It would be helpful to have real information about the environment, like the exact make/model of the modem, the ISP involved, and the following information from the computer. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command: Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command. IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
