Mistake [SOLVED] Installing a new wireless router: linksys

Name of your ISP : AT&T/SBC DSL
Make and exact model of the broadband modem: Netopia 2210-02 ADSL2+( Not exactly sure b/c modem does not say just looked it up on Moto’s site)
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router: Linksys54G 1.1
Connection type: Wired
If wireless, encryption used: Haven’t set it up yet
OS: XP Home SP2
The Internet Browser in use: Firefox

The problem is that I’m installing this Linksys wireless router(upgrading from some years back) where my previous router was a D-LINK EBR-2310 2.01. I go through the setup process and get to the end and it says that it cannot find an internet connection. Though all lights show internet is present and everything shows up as normal. I have tried power cycling to no avail. When I put the old router back in the mix and remove the Linksys and power cycle I get internet again. This is the main computer so everything is affected by the problem with this one’s lack of internet access. Tried searching through the forums but can't seem to strike gold so here it all is and hope i don't look like a fool:) Hope that covers everything.

Re: Installing a new wireless router: linksys

The problem here is the Netopia 2210-02 is a modem/router and it's using the same 192.168.1.x subnet as your router. This makes it impossible for the router to connect to the WAN (Internet) interface.

You can do a couple of things here.
  1. Configure the Netopia 2210-02 in bridge mode to eliminate it's routing function (best option).
  2. Configure the Linksys base address to be 192.168.2.1 (simplest option)
  3. Configure the Linksys router as a WAP and eliminate it's routing function (second best option)

Here's how to configure the router as a WAP (option # 3)

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

This procedure bypasses the routing function (NAT layer) and configures the router as a switch (or wireless access point for wireless routers).

For reference, here's a link to a Typical example config using a Netgear router

Re: Installing a new wireless router: linksys

Thanks for the quick reply! I had a feeling that was the problem...well the basic problem being that my modem was also a router. So you described the 3rd option it looks like so I'll try the 1st and as you said best option. Having a hard time finding exactly how to do so but we'll see what I come up with. Thanks and I'll keep you updated!
EDIT*
Looks like it's under my advanced settings for the modem under PPP Location. We'll try to switch to bridge mode now.

Re: Installing a new wireless router: linksys

Well it appears that as usual my limited knowledge of networking has ended getting me in worse off than I originally was☺ Option 1) I put the Netopia into bridge mode which seemed simple enough and then it saved changed and booted me out of that page (b/c the IP it had didn’t exist anymore?). This did not appear to do any good, though the Netopias internet and activity lights blanked out and are no longer on. I could not figure out how to get it on the internet by any other way than giving the original IP address to the Linksys. So I tried the 2nd option, I changed the IP address but wasn’t sure what to do if anything about the starting IP address. Basically now I’m completely stuck☺ Can not connect with the old setup or with the new and fear I’m no closer to connectivity. So I reset the modem and put the old setup together again. I have an over DSL phone service and the phone works though I still have no internet. A comedy of errors I suppose. Here is updated info.

Re: Installing a new wireless router: linksys

You have DHCP disabled on your computer, which is one issue.

Select Start > Settings > Network Connections.
  • Double-click the Connection icon of the connection you wish to modify to open the Local Area Connection Status window.
  • Click the Properties button to open the Local Area Connection Properties window.
  • Click to highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
  • Click the Properties button to open the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.
  • TCP/IP Properties window, IP Address tab
  • Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
  • Select Obtain DNS server address automatically.
  • Click OK to return to the Local Area Connection Properties window.
  • Click OK to return to the Network Connections window.

Re: Installing a new wireless router: linksys

Yeah I noticed that later when I was doing some research. I am going to try to set that back in a minute. Funny thing is that wireless router seems to be routing....I'm using a usb adapter on the other pc to get on the net. I'm in an apartment so it could be a unsecured neighbors connection but it's 100% so I doubt it....and considering it's "linksys" like I named it I find that quite interesting. I'll post back when I get DHCP enabled.

EDIT
DHCP is now enabled. So...it's working? I mean I'm not sure how. I guess somehow everything is working. Linksys router connects to the net. Not sure how this is all working now...I basically think I put it all back to default...aha theres the change. Starting IP Address is now 192.168.2.1...I don't know how that happened overall. I did change Local IP Address to this and somehow it changed the IP that I was not able to edit before through the setup. Well this is the final edit unless it all blows up:P But seriously if you have this problem I guess change starting IP address in setup through Firefox or IE and restart. Everything works fine in this case. Thanks johnwill for your expertise.

Re: [SOLVED] Installing a new wireless router: linksys

That's the right way to go, less confusion in the future and only one router to ever have to configure after that.
