Loosing DSL connection

The IP is AT&T Yahoo
Modem is Motorola 2210, no router
Connection is wired, high speed DSL
The OS is Windows XP Professional

I do not use a router. The connection goes in and out. I reinstalled the modem from the AT&T's disk and changed filters. The only two lights on the modem is power and Ethernet. Could it be the modem itself or most likely another issue? Please, help.

Re: Loosing DSL connection

I'm having a similar problem but I have a linksys router. I've been on tech support calls the last 2 days trying to get this straightened out. They've had me reset the modem to un-bridged mode and bypass the router plugging directly from the modem into my computer. That allows me to connect so I then have to change the connection type back to bridged, go to my router page and reset my login and connect. Finally I'm connected. What sucks is that this fix only works temporarily. I got this fix working yesterday afternoon and I was online for the rest of the day without problems but this morning it was going in and out again. They're having someone check the dsl lines on monday but I'm wondering if it's possibly my router dying. Anyone know what symptoms you get when a linksys router is about to die? I've had it for at least 7 years now but it's never been moved or abused. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Had almost the exact same problem a while back. Our service would go out for hours at a time, then go a month with no problem. The customer service rep I dealt with was awesome.

Finally had to have a tech out to rewire the line coming into the house. Fixed the problem. No charge.

If a tech come out, he will check the signal of the lines coming in. Ours were waaaayyy below what they should of been.

I don't think this will be that big of a deal.

Re: Loosing DSL connection

ATT will run you ragged to avoid sending a tech. Recheck all phones for filters..
If you have a DSL light on the modem and its not steady green, I suspect an issue with the signal coming to the Modem.
Do you have static on the phones, or is this a dry line dsl?
Can you borrow a modem to verify if its bad or not?

Re: Loosing DSL connection

It's the modem, the interior wiring, or the ISP. Any one could cause the symptoms.

I'd connect the modem directly to the service entrance and disconnect all the other telephone equipment for a test. If this doesn't work, you'll need to get AT&T to replace the modem and/or fix their service.

Re: Loosing DSL connection

Thanks everyone for your help. I just got online here (dial up), so able to at least check messages.

Tired of guessing and not really that technical myself. Wanted to schedule a tech visit. Described symptoms to the rep: including automatic restarting of the modem and some line static (used a corded phone noticed it right away). The rep said to replace the modem first. They will give it to me free if I committ to 1 year of service. Do not want to do that. After that she did not want to schedule the tech to come out. Going to call tomorrow, ask for a supervisor, and be persistent. If there is too much noise on the line, the modem replacement will not solve it. Though most likely it needs to be replaced anyway (it should not shut off and restart automatically).

Tried to connect the modem directly, no difference. I did not find another modem to test the connection. Might switch providers if they continue to give me hard time with scheduling tech support.

As for the problems on their end... Well, it is perfect there, according to AT&T.

Re: Loosing DSL connection

Static in the phone lines is a classic sign of telephone line issues.

Re: Loosing DSL connection

ATT has a seperate repair reporting for DSL issues, and dial tone issues.
You may have to call the residence repair service, and place a report on the dial tone #, then after thats resolved see how the DSL is and go from there.
