Incorrect Download Speed?

G'day, ive got a D-link ADSL modem.. its connected to the computer via usb.. we've got the dodo broadband unlimited plan which connects at 1.5 mbps..
(1536 kbps to break it down)

my issue is with the download speed. if my connection speed is 1.5 mbps.. then shouldn't my download speed be something around 200kbps? every time we download ANYTHING the speed varies in range between 17kbps and 30 odd kbps. i just downloaded a 3.5 gb game and it took over 50 hours. thats just crazily bad.. i just want to know whats going on
1) are we being ripped off?
2) is that the speed that a 1.5mbps connection is supposed to DL at?
3) is there something i can do to increase the speed myself?

-i dont try and download 2 things at once..
-when i download i dont have anything else running..
-theres only one computer using it..
-ive conducted multiple virus scans recently and nothing has shown.

what could it be? :S

heres some things i dont understand but might be useful for analysis..
DSL Status ->
State: Data
Modulation: G.DMT
RX Data Rate: 1536 kbps
TX Data Rate: 64 kbps

i did a speed test on a website (both an aussie one and an American one) to check DL speed, it told me 244 kbps on both, yet this is not the speed shown when i download something, which i can tell by the slow ness of my downloads. as said before, it varies between 17 kbps and 30 something kbps..

dodo has a bad name as far as isp's go
i have a 24.000 adsl+2 speed with iinet and with the sydney bottleneck on the pacific cable cannot acheive even adsl 1 speeds
the router shows 3900+ but acheive at best 1.2 on occasions usually less

It also depends on where you are downloading it from. For example torrent download speeds vary based on how many people are seeding and what their connection is.

I know of the policy, my comment wasn't aimed at suppoerting them I was just giving an example of where download speeds can rely on more than just your own bandwidth.

hmm i know it cant be because of other people downloading the same things because it is the same with every single thing i download. .
i just want my connection to be faster at this stuff.. when i did my speed test both a washington based one and i think an Adelaide based one, might have to check, both showed me a speed of around 243-244 kbps. so im not sure if its due to location.. i know dodos a shocking provider ;), we've been with the buggers since dial up days.. but i think once the current contract expires its definately time for a new provider.

i saw some videos bout TCP optimisers but i dont know the backbone of them so i'm not gonna risk it.. do these work at increasing speed?

i just think.. 32kbps dl speed average from our broadband 1.5mbps connection.. (not really fast broadband but it was okay back when we first got it compared to others)..
it should just be allot faster than that.. even 100 kbps i'd be happy with, though our speed should be higher it would be a hell of a lot better than 32kbps <- thats nearly as bad as dial up and yet the connection speed is many times faster.. 27.428 times faster to be exact.. should not the download speed be faster -_- arrghh.. lol

not about this particular problem, i couldn't handle being on hold for that long so i hung up. i will at some point when i have the time.. in the past i have usually had to go through about 2 or 3 different people with them to get to the one with the answer for the particular problems.. its horrible >:( it took about 1 hr just to find out that both lights on the modem have to be on for it to connect, and all i had to do was make sure everything was plugged in better to make the light come on lol.

i guess all i can really do here is change provider and go for a faster connection. perhaps a provider with stronger links to the rest of the world than dodo and their tin-foil dinner plate sized satellite XD

they all seem to take time to get through,i put the phone on speaker and carry on with what i am doing until they come online

if its a 24/7 place call them at times no one else would call, but you happen to be awake, if its not 24/7 then be like the first to call them when they open. I know all that is a hassel but I think its better than a 45min to 2 hr wait time. I have hung up with calls because I hear wait time of an hour and its like, well I don't want to waste all those minutes on my cell, I will just call back later or tomorrow (and I do and it can go down a lot)
