Internet connection probs/modem help...

I've been having internet probs lately. My modem shows a connection, but it will randomly drop me or go very very slow. When I connect directly to the modem I have the same problems...router seems ok. I've heard that at&t modems die pretty often, but I would like to know if that my case for sure.
-let me know if any more info than what I have below is needed.

Thanks.

ISP - AT&T SBC Yahoo DSL
Modem - Speedstream 4100
Router - Linksys WRT160N
-Wired connection
-Windows XP SP3
-Firefox

Re: Internet connection probs/modem help...

I'd suspect the ISP first.

Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.

Re: Internet connection probs/modem help...

I enabled ICMP in windows firewall, but I still get a "not pingable" alert.
I couldn't find an option to enable ICMP in my router. I have Avast 4.8 home edition, but didn't see an ICMP setting either.

Re: Internet connection probs/modem help...

Well, you indeed have line quality issues, time to call the ISP and beat on them.

Re: Internet connection probs/modem help...

Aight. I had a feeling it was an ISP prob, just didn't have any concrete evidence. Thanks for your help.
