Losing internet connection frequently, other computer has no problems

Hi, I've been having this connection problem for awhile now and it's getting really annoying. My problem is that several times an hour, my connection will go out. My status always shows as connected and the strength is excellent. The connection always comes back within a few minutes but I have a new job that pretty much requires a constant connection.

I am on a wireless network and my other computer never loses connection, so I don't believe it's my router.

Here's a little more info. My computer is a compaq nc8230 running windows xp service pack 3. I have a cable connection and I'm using a Belkin router with 2 laptops connected to my network. I've updated my router's firmware but not sure what else to try.

Thanks

Some things you can try here.
  1. For wireless connections, change the channel on the router, I like channels 1, 6, and 11 in the US.
  2. For wireless connections, try moving either the wireless router/AP or the wireless computer. Even a couple of feet will sometimes make a big difference.
  3. Update the firmware to the latest version available on the manufacturer's site.
  4. Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.
  5. Update the network drivers (wired and wireless) on your computer to the latest available.

Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues.

Thanks for the response. I've seen this response on another thread and tried the suggestions but they don't work. I believe it's the computer itself and not the router since the other computer has had no issues.

Well, the location of the computer in relation to the wireless router can greatly affect things, which is why I recommend the channel change.

I'd try a wired connection for a long enough period of time to determine if it's a wireless connectivity issue, or something running on the machine affecting all networking.

Trust me, the channel setting in the router can be the issue. Maybe it's interfering with another signal or the wireless card in your computer doesn't support the channel it's currently on. The safest bet is usually channel 6.
