Linksys etherfast 5 port switch problem

i'm gonna try to explain this the best way i can but it is very confusing. i have an 8MB connection and i had my sister's computer connected to mine via ics so she can use the internet too. i bought a new xbox and needed another ethernet port on my computer so instead of purchasing another one i got this 5 port switch so i can just plug everything up to it. at first everything went fine except my sister's computer couldn't connect (limited or no connectivity) so i decided to put hers back the way i had it before (through my second ethernet port) and just put my connection and the xbox connection through the switch. hers worked and my xbox worked fine, however my computer got the limited or no connectivity message. i'm really advanced with computers (going to school for programming) but have no idea when it comes to routers and hubs and switches as i never needed one. i was thinking if i ran the network wizard and set my connection to connect through a hub if it'll work but then my sisters won't work cause she is connected to my other ethernet port on my computer instead of the switch. i set hers up to connect through a hub before but still got no luck. the only reason i got it working now is because i unplugged my xbox connection and unplugged both switch and modem, plugging modem back in first. i really need and will appreciate any help.

Re: Linksys etherfast 5 port switch problem

If I understand right when you use ICS it bridges her connection to yours, when you plugged her into the switch directly did you change her settings so it wasn't bridged to yours anymore?

Re: Linksys etherfast 5 port switch problem

ICS creates a DHCP server, so the switch should support multiple TCP/IP devices exactly the way it was working before adding the switch.

Let's see this from both your computer and the sister's machine.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Linksys etherfast 5 port switch problem

thanks for all of the help. i tried it so many different ways and it just wasn't working so i took it back and bought a wireless router cause it was cheaper than a wired one. now everything works perfect.

Re: Linksys etherfast 5 port switch problem

somewhat of a speed problem. when i had ics, the cord reached to the completely other side of the house to my sister's room and it was going through a Ethernet coupler (modified to be a crossover coupler) in the living room cause my two brothers got laptops and the would plug the crossover from the coupler into theirs instead of going all the way to my sister's room. basicly all three was using the same connection depending on which one needed it. it didn't bother my speed at all. now that everyone has their own connection, when i cut my xbox on, it sits there for about 30 seconds before it logs me in to xbox live and i keep loosing connection when playing online.

i'm paying for 8MB down and 512KB up but not getting anywhere near that speed (disputing that problem with isp now). is it possible to set the bandwidth between each connection? this is the router i have.

Re: Linksys etherfast 5 port switch problem

You probably need a newer router, that looks like a pretty old model. The issue is lack of QoS capability, which is what you need to set priorities on the network usage.

Re: Linksys etherfast 5 port switch problem

thanks for the help. i typed in my ip address and went to router's configuration page but i didn't see no priorities or how to limit each connection. how would i go about doing that. also i haven't set a user name or password and was going to do that but can't that be easily hacked? i have eset smart security and it hasn't let a virus through my computer yet. will it firewall my router too or will i have to get a separate firewall and virus program for my router. if so, any recommendations?

Re: Linksys etherfast 5 port switch problem

You can't install AV and firewall software on the router, it's a "canned" capability, what you see is what you get. Routers have an inherent firewall capability with the NAT layer.

Re: Linksys etherfast 5 port switch problem

HELP HELP HELP. someone is already trying to steal my internet. last night someone was connected to my wireless router. i then set a password for it. but after i set a password for it and clicked apply, it updated, then i couldn't connect to the internet anymore. where do i put my login and password on my computer to get to the internet after i set it on the router and how do i set a wireless password. i have another brother that comes over a lot and he uses the wireless with his laptop so i don't want to disable it just in case i'm not home. some people told me to use wep but some people said not to use that but use a 128-bit WPA2 password of 64 random characters. i don't know what kind of wireless password to set up. how would i go about doing that?

also, my computer is dual booted with linux. someone told me to use wireshark and kismet (and after doing a couple of simple things) be able to "port forward all the persons stuff to my computer." seems like a good punishment. recommend it?
