DSL Speeds

I use AT&T DSL for my ISP (lower end plan). If I take an internet connection speed test online, my downstream is usually ~600 kb/s, and my upstream is usually about 300 kb/s. My question is: if in these tests that is my connection speed, why have I NEVER been able to download anything faster than 80 kb/s (from sources that would definitely be able to give me faster speeds than that)?

You're confusing bits and bytes. Your download is in bytes/sec, so 80kbytes * 8 = 640kbits, looks fine to me.
