[SOLVED] router with no computer?
I had a question for you guys, Im not real knowledgable about this kind of stuff...
I have comcast cable, Ive been wanting to make it wireless, but i have my Modem next to my ps3 and 360, and i dont have a computer near by, now i want to hook up a router to the internet so that way other people in my house can use the internet also... so essentially my question is, can i have a router hooked up to my cable modem without a computer also being hooked up to the router? ive gotten mixed answers and would like some clarification I do have a computer in my home, its just far away, and i dont want to buy the wireless internet adapter for my 360 and would prefer to keep a wired connection to the 360 and ps3 any help is greatly appreciated, or if you have suggestions the other question i have is should i get the wireless modem that comcast can provide? or should i get my own router? and dont say "move your computer closer" cause thats not possible with my setup |

Re: router with no computer?
Secure?...having a computer connected doesn't make it any more or less secure. After you hook up your router, go to the router's configuration screen and set some passwords and some encryption.
Buy your own, eventually, it'll be cheaper that way.

Re: router with no computer?
This is basically the most successful and popular router available:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833124190 If you do get this router you might want to upgrade it's firmware to DD-WRT: http://lifehacker.com/software/route...ter-178132.php

Re: router with no computer?
You can buy a perfectly serviceable router for $20-30.

Re: router with no computer?
That's true, but you know what they say, "you get what you pay for."
Last year, when my 15 year old standard tv broke down, I had an option of getting a cheap Olivia 26 inch HDTV for $399 or Sony Bravia 26 inch HDTV for $650. If I got the Olivia one, it'd probably break down within 3-4 years or a pixel would burn out. So I decided to go with the higher quality Sony one. It'll definitely last longer with more features.

Re: router with no computer?
This is a good router at a good price . . with the code EMCABCHAE it is $35
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...L2C-_-33122016 Once you get it, come back and ask nicely and JW will tell you how to configure it to work with your cable router. See this for educational purposes: http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/net.asp

which router should i get guys? the first one suggested in this thread? the linksys one, or should i get the netgear one that is 35 im personally thinking this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833124190 mainly because of reviews, and how people said that there gaming experience online got better after getting a firmware update, the netgear one seems kinda cheap Last edited by Gamingfan; 01-27-2009 at 03:51 PM. |

Re: router with no computer?
thanks for all your help guys, i got everything to work perfect so far
I setup all the settings for the router on my ps3 web browser, I had to connect the router to the computer first and copied the serial mac address or something like that, then i connected it to my ps3 and went through all the settings, setup the wep key etc it was a little easier than i thought it would be |
