two modems?

hi there, i am currently with virgin media, i have a modem upstairs connected to my router which in turn is connected to my pc. i get a poor connection downstairs even after tweaking the router so here was my solution.

i was wondering if it is possible to get another modem and set it up downstairs with a router. i have the cable wiring done downstairs and it is exactly like it is upstairs.

will it work?
would i get the same speed?
will i have to pay any extra charges?

if not is there any other alternative?

Nope, it won't work. For a cable account, you need to have each modem provisioned by the ISP, which they obviously charge you the standard account fee for. For DSL, you can only connect a single modem to any given phone line, there is no way to get two DSL/ADSL modems working on the same phone line.

Hawking Tech has a number of products that will help you increase your wireless range. The root page is Hawking Hi-Gain™ WiFi Range Extending Products.

Some of the more interesting products are this Hawking [HSB2] Hi-Gain WiFi Signal Booster, which can be used on either end of a wireless connection to boost the signal power.

Another way to increase your signal strength is by the use of hi-gain antennas. You can choose from omni-directional or directional models, here are a some examples.

Hawking [HAI7SIP] Hi-Gain 7dBi Omni-Directional Antenna

Hawking [HAI15SC] Hi-Gain 15dBi Corner Antenna

[HAO14SD] Outdoor Hi-Gain 14dBi Directional Antenna Kit

This is just a sample of available products, many people have hi-gain antennas with similar specifications, but I haven't seen any other suppliers of signal boosters.

Have you considered a wired solution? Why not use 10/100 switch and run Cat 5 cable from upstairs to downstairs?
